La conferenza è organizzata dalla NATO Defense College Foundation, in cooperazione con la Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, la NATO Public Diplomacy Division, MBDA, e il NATO Defense College. L’iniziativa si terrà mercoledì 9 e giovedì 10 giugno p.v. dalle 15.00 alle 17.00, nel pieno adempimento delle normative vigenti. Le discussioni saranno riprese e trasmesse in stile talk show televisivo, in diretta streaming sull’interattiva piattaforma digitale NDCF Talks in italiano e in inglese. Un parterre di venti esperti anticiperà alcune delle riflessioni del prossimo Summit NATO.
Tra questi, esponenti presenti e passati dell’Alleanza atlantica, specialisti internazionali e rappresentati del Governo italiano.
Il summit di quest’anno segna un vero e proprio spartiacque per l’Alleanza. Nell’ultima decade ci si è chiesto se l’Organizzazione fosse ancora indispensabile, poi si è pensato a come riadattarla, e a 72 anni dalla firma del Trattato di Washington la NATO è ancora oggi il principale garante della sicurezza globale. Alla luce della complessità delle minacce odierne, è arrivato il momento di attuare riforme che possano mantenere l’Alleanza al passo con i tempi. Il passaggio di Presidenza da Trump a Biden, la crescente assertività dimostrata da Russia e Cina su vari fronti e le sfide poste da nuove tecnologie sono solo alcuni degli eventi che richiedono un ripensamento dell’Alleanza.
Introduce questi temi il segretario generale aggiunto della NATO Baiba Braže, che con un suo intervento dal quartier generale di Bruxelles aprirà i lavori della prima sessione, dedicata al processo di rinnovamento dell’Alleanza. In questo panel interverranno, tra gli altri, Marta Dassù e Tacan Ildem, due membri del Gruppo di Riflessione della NATO, autore del recente rapporto NATO 2030.
Chiuderà la prima giornata un dibattito che vedrà Damon Wilson e Julian Lindley-French, esperti di livello mondiale, discutere sull’importanza di attori multilaterali in un mondo sempre più imprevedibile. Il tutto moderato dalla corrispondente di “Politico” Hannah Roberts.
Il secondo giorno si aprirà con un intervento speciale del sottosegretario agli Affari esteri Benedetto della Vedova. Subito dopo, il secondo panel discuterà sul perché l’Alleanza abbia bisogno di un network di partner globali. Tra gli esperti che affronteranno il ruolo strategico delle partnership NATO nel mondo arabo e nell’Indo-Pacifico, Oded Eran e Chloe Berger.
A chiudere i lavori, le conclusioni del presidente della Commissione Affari esteri, Piero Fassino.

NATO 2021: rebuilding the consensus for a new era – The conference is organised by the NATO Defense College Foundation, in co-operation with the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, NATO Public Diplomacy Division, MBDA and the NATO Defense College. The initiative will take place on the 9th and 10th of June, from 3 PM to 5 PM (CEST), broadcasted as a television talk show and in full compliance with the current regulations concerning COVID-19 and public events.
The discussions will be live-streamed on the interactive digital platform NDCF Talks. A timely two-day debate will address the future of the Atlantic Alliance, right ahead of this historical NATO Summit, gathering 19 highly qualified practitioners (in-person and virtually). Among them, current and former NATO representatives, members of the Reflection Group appointed by the Secretary General, international specialists and members of the Italian Government.
The world has deeply changed since the end of Cold War and NATO has now the task to rebuild a consensus on its fundamentals and its missions. Many questions arise concerning its future role: how to reinvigorate the transatlantic bond in the Biden era? How to deal with Russia and China? How to maintain the technological edge in the coming decade?
Baiba Braže (Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, NATO HQ, Brussels) will deliver the initial remarks of the event and introduce the first session dedicated to the work underway on the reform of the Alliance. On this topic, among others, Marta Dassù (Senior Director of European Affairs, The Aspen Institute, Rome) and Ian Lesser (Vice President, The German Marshall Fund of the United States, Brussels) taking stock of the EU-NATO collaboration and the future role of NATO worldwide through the prism of the NATO 2030 Agenda.
During the second working day, we will delve into the crucial role of NATO Partners worldwide. To face the increasing global assertiveness of China, the persistent instability in the Middle East and a new set of threats posed by emerging disruptive technologies, NATO needs indeed a new Strategic Concept. Oded Eran (Senior Research Fellow, Institute for National Security Studies, Tel Aviv) and Chloe Berger (Researcher, NATO Defense College, Rome) will address the possible evolution of the partnerships in the Arab region, while other specialists will explore the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific area.
The two sessions will be spaced out by an agile debate with Damon Wilson (Executive Vice President, Atlantic Council, Washington D.C.) and Julian Lindley-French (Chairman, The Alphen Group, Rotterdam) interviewed by Hannah Roberts (POLITICO Correspondent to Italy) on the value of Allies and Multilateralism in an unpredictable world.
