Il Dipartimento della Difesa statunitense (DoD) e la US Navy hanno assegnato alla controllata statunitense di Fincantieri, Marinette Marine (FMM), un contratto del valore di 7 milioni di dollari per sviluppare il progetto e l’ingegnerizzazione delle Large Unmanned Surface Vessel (LUSV), le future navi di superficie di grandi dimensioni «unmanned», ovvero capaci di operare senza equipaggio a bordo.
Fincantieri Marinette Marine è stata selezionata insieme ad altre cinque società, ciascuna delle quali svilupperà il progetto di base entro agosto 2021.
Il contratto prevede l’opzione per un’ulteriore fase di studio per sviluppare l’ingegnerizzazione di dettaglio, che se esercitata estenderebbe la durata del lavoro fino al maggio 2022.
Il processo di aggiudicazione seguirà lo schema della gara per le dieci nuove fregate lanciamissili FFG(X) della US Navy, vinta da FMM quattro mesi fa e che, comprese le opzioni, ammonta a un valore complessivo di 5,5 miliardi di dollari.
Con il risultato conseguito, Fincantieri continua a raccogliere i frutti di un lungo lavoro iniziato dodici anni fa con l’acquisizione dei cantieri in America, che nel frattempo sono stati modernizzati ed efficientati, al punto che oggi sono indiscutibilmente riconosciuti come un’eccellenza nel campo delle costruzioni navali.
Oltre al recente traguardo delle fregate, il Gruppo a partecipazione pubblica sta sviluppando per la marina militare statunitense il programma Littoral Combat Ships, che prevede la costruzione di sedici navi (delle quali dieci già consegnate), e la costruzione di quattro unità Multi-Mission Surface Combatants (MMSC), destinate al Regno dell’Arabia Saudita, nell’ambito del Foreign Military Sales degli Stati Uniti.
FMM rappresenta la punta di diamante di Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), che controlla altri due cantieri sempre nella regione dei Grandi Laghi (Wisconsin), Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding e Fincantieri Ace Marine, e annovera clienti commerciali e governativi, tra i quali la US Coast Guard.

The Department of Defense and the US Navy awarded to Fincantieri’s subsidiary, Marinette Marine (FMM), a $7 million contract for design and engineering work of the Large Unmanned Surface Vessel (LUSV), the future large-size unmanned surface vessels, able to operate without crew on board.
Fincantieri Marinette Marine has been shortlisted with five other companies. Each of them will develop the conceptual design within August 2021. The contract includes an option for an additional study phase to develop detailed engineering work that, if exercised, would extend the duration to May 2022.
The award process will follow the scheme of the tender for the 10 first-in-class guided-missile FFG(X) frigates of the US Navy, awarded to Fincantieri Marinette Marine four months ago, collectively worth $5.5 billion.
With this success, Fincantieri reaps the rewards of a long-lasting commitment started 12 years ago with the acquisition of the shipyards in the US. In the meantime, the facilities have been modernized and improved in efficiency so much that today they are undoubtedly acknowledged as an excellence in shipbuilding.
In addition to the recent milestone of the FFG(X) frigates, the Group is currently developing the Littoral Combat Ships program for the US Navy, envisaging the construction of 16 vessels (10 of which already delivered). The US subsidiary is also involved in the construction of 4 Multi-Mission Surface Combatants (MMSC) for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of the US Foreign Military Sales program.
FMM is the spearhead of Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), which controls two other shipyards also located in the Great Lakes (Wisconsin) – Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding and Fincantieri Ace Marine. The company serves commercial and government customers, including the US Coast Guard.
