Da oggi (27 marzo 2024) fino al 16 giugno, la Galerie du 19M dà carta bianca al designer Stéphane Ashpool ponendolo nelle condizioni di esplorare l’intersezione tra il suo mondo e il savoir-faire dei Mestieri d’arte. Partendo dalla moda, mediante la mostra “Figure libre” Ashpool presenterà opere multidisciplinari, dunque di moda, fotografia, video, musica e altro, arricchite da eventi culturali e artistici concepiti assieme ad artisti e performer suoi ospiti.
CELEBRARE IL POTERE DEL COLLETTIVO
Infatti, questa è la stagione nella quale si celebra il potere del collettivo e la necessità di condividere le conoscenze, che poi è uno dei valori chiave di le19M. Dunque, un’occasione per scoprire come l’abbigliamento sportivo possa essere una forma d’arte, un approccio che non è solo tecnico, poiché risponde all’insopprimibile bisogno del corpo di muoversi liberamente, ma altresì una ricerca della performance e una celebrazione visiva che il corpo onora, attraverso la scelta dei tessuti e degli ornamenti che celebrano l’abilità atletica. Contestualmente alla mostra, Galerie du 19M organizza una serie di laboratori pratici utili a porre i visitatori nelle condizioni ottimali per scoprire i Mestieri d’arte. Inoltre, in programma anche conferenze ed eventi nel fine settimana che vedranno riunirsi artisti, artigiani e performer che lavorano con il movimento.

Stéphane Ashpool viene considerato uno «stilista iconoclasta», egli lavora per il marchio di abbigliamento sportivo Pigalle Paris. Vincitore del Grand Prix Andam 2015, è intento alla ridefinizione dei codici della moda urbana ricorrendo a soluzioni improntate alla follia e all’autenticità. La sua vita di stilista ha finora annoverato collaborazioni di vaglia, quali quelle con Nike, Missoni, e altri grandi della moda e dello sport. Qualla di Parigi è una sua una mostra retrospettiva, ma soltanto in parte, poiché svela lo straripante universo che fonde estetica urbana e spirito raffinato.

From 27 March to 16 June 2024, la Galerie du 19M is giving designer Stéphane Ashpool a carte blanche to explore the intersection of his world and the savoir-faire of the Métiers d’art. With fashion as its starting point, the exhibition Figure libre. Stéphane Ashpool showcases multi-disciplinary works (fashion, photography, video, music, etc.) extended by regular cultural and artistic events designed with guest artists and performers.
THE POWER OF THE COLLECTIVE
This season celebrates the power of the collective and the need for knowledge-sharing, one of le19M’s key values. It is an opportunity to discover how sportswear can be an art form, an approach that is not only technical—responding to the body’s need to move freely in search of performance—but also a visual celebration that honours the body through the choice of fabrics and ornamentation that celebrate athletic prowess. To coincide with the exhibition, la Galerie du 19M is organising a series of practical workshops to help visitors discover the Métiers d’art, as well as talks and weekend events bringing together artists, craftspeople, and performers working with movement.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXHIBITION «FIGURE LIBRE»
A self-taught all-rounder, the inventor of a unique world rooted in the working-class streets of northern Paris where he grew up, Stéphane Ashpool worked for two decades at the intersection of sport, fashion, and music. The winner of the Andam Grand Prix in 2015, he was mentored for two years by Bruno Pavlovsky, Chairman of Chanel SAS and President of le19M, who took him into the Maisons d’art. This laid the groundwork for the multidisciplinary exhibition Figure libre. Stéphane Ashpool, which reveals an up-close-and-personal portrait of the designer.
SPECTACULAR DIMENSION
The designer’s sportswear and performance costumes combine technical virtuosity and visual celebration. They respond to the need for bodies to move with ease and comfort, but with a spectacular dimension through the choice of materials, patterns, and ornaments. By bringing together macro and micro scales, open and closed volumes, sensitivity and technicality, amplitude and precision, the exhibition presents a fashion territory where the movements of an athlete on the field and those of a performer on the stage intersect, an exhibition that also calls on the meticulous gestures and savoir-faire of the artisans of le19M.
NEW PIECES CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition, conceived as a modular playground in collaboration with scenographer Georgi Stanishev, begins with garments and accessories from these early works and collaborations, notably with the Pigalle label. Accompanied by photographs and archival documents, these items illustrate the sustained creative dialogue between the designer and the Maisons d’art for close to 10 years. The second sequence presents new pieces created specifically for the exhibition at la Galerie du 19M: clothing with the Lognon pleating workshop of Maison Lemarié; hats with Maison Michel; accessories with Lesage and Lemarié; research into materials and shapes with Studio MTX. Sculptural pieces that play with scale, materials, and functionality populate the exhibition. Samples, photographs, and videos reveal the making-of of this unique capsule collection. To round things off, a video installation invites viewers to take a closer look at Stéphane Ashpool’s creative process, using textures, colours, and materials to create his work in the heart of the Maisons d’art workshops.
